Niclas Fullkrug faced heavy criticism after West Ham suffered a 1-0 loss to Wolves at Molineux on Tuesday night.
The German striker made his first appearance since mid-January, having missed 10 matches due to a hamstring injury.
He came on at half-time, replacing Evan Ferguson, as manager Graham Potter sought an equalizer.
However, Fullkrug squandered a golden opportunity to level the score for his team. His return to action didn’t go as expected.
Before the match, West Ham were struggling in 16th place, just eight points ahead of Wolves in the table.
The narrow defeat allowed Wolves to close that gap, leaving West Ham with nothing to show for their efforts.
Despite West Ham’s struggle to break down Wolves’ defense through Ferguson, Potter opted to bring on Fullkrug in the 46th minute. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old failed to register a single shot on target and appeared lacking in confidence in front of goal.
In the second half, Lucas Paqueta sent a brilliant pass to Fullkrug, but instead of taking the shot himself, he passed the ball to Jarrod Bowen.
Wolves took the lead in the 21st minute through Jorgen Strand Larsen, and West Ham spent the remainder of the match chasing an equalizer.
Fullkrug’s performance drew sharp criticism from pundit Clinton Morrison, who expressed doubt about the striker’s quality. Speaking on Sky Sports News (8:56pm, 1 April), Morrison said: “It’s a great ball from Paqueta.
West Ham are dominating, and Fullkrug makes a great run into the box. But instead of going for the shot, all he does is square it to Bowen, who misses. Then he tries a ridiculous shot. This isn’t the same player I saw for Germany.
I know he’s coming back from injury, but that’s not an excuse. He needs to show more composure. It wasn’t good enough.”
Potter’s tenure at West Ham is under increasing pressure. Since taking over in January, he has overseen five losses and only 11 points from his first few months in charge.
The former Chelsea manager needs to turn things around quickly or risk a further slide down the table.
While West Ham remain 17 points clear of the relegation zone, they are just five points above 17th-placed Wolves.
With a tough schedule ahead, including a visit to high-flying Bournemouth and then a trip to Anfield, Potter faces mounting pressure. If results don’t improve, he may not survive beyond the summer.
