“That is so unjust, we deserve the win because…”- Furious Southampton boss Ivan Juric Verdict sparks Volume following 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace
Manager Ivan Juric expressed he was “very proud” of Southampton’s performance despite a last-minute 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
Matheus Franca’s stoppage-time header for Palace denied Saints their third Premier League win of the season, leaving them on the verge of an unwanted record.
Franca’s late goal means Southampton will be relegated on Sunday if they lose to Tottenham and Wolves beat Ipswich.
If relegation is confirmed this weekend, Southampton will be the first team in Premier League history to be relegated with seven matches still to play.
While Saints reached double digits for the season, they are still one point shy of Derby’s record-low points total of 11.
Juric remained proud of his team’s effort, believing they did enough to secure all three points at St Mary’s.
“I’m very proud of the way we played today, but very disappointed that we didn’t win because we did almost everything right,” he said.
“I had a good feeling on the bench that we weren’t risking anything, that we were a solid, compact group. I’m really sorry for the fans and the players that we didn’t win.
“I believe we deserved it. It came down to one moment. I felt like we were in control of the game.
“We didn’t give them any chances or anything dangerous. I had a really good feeling, and then it was just that one moment.
“They delivered a good cross, and we lost a bit of height without Paul (Onuachu) and Flynn (Downes). Maybe that’s the reason.”
Juric added: “I think everyone needs a bit more time to understand everything. The players have taken a step forward, and I’ve taken a step back.
“I felt really positive that we could compete today because there were moments when we pressed well and won the ball at the right moments.
“We can improve with the ball, though, as we lost possession in the middle a few times. Defensively, we were really solid.
“We deserved to win today. In terms of performance, we definitely deserved more. We only took one point.
“We now need to prepare well for the next match. If we keep playing like this, we’ll pick up points.”
