“David Moyes’ Shocking Comment That Could Put Everton Striker Beto’s Future in Jeopardy
Everton played out a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday in the Premier League, but once again, striker Beto failed to find the net.
The Toffees came from behind to earn a point at Goodison Park after Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal the lead in the first half.
Everton displayed resilience in their comeback, though their equalizer had a controversial element.
Jack Harrison went down under a challenge from Myles Lewis-Skelly, which started outside the box, leading to a penalty decision that was upheld by VAR.
Both Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy felt it shouldn’t have been a penalty, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta visibly frustrated by the decision.
Former referee Mike Dean also believed Everton shouldn’t have been awarded the spot-kick.
Despite the result, Beto remained scoreless, extending his goal drought to five games. After the match, Everton manager David Moyes made a comment that may put the striker on alert.
Moyes acknowledged that Everton are missing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has been sidelined due to injury, amid Beto’s recent struggles.
Since Moyes took charge in January, Beto has been a key figure in the team, thriving in the absence of Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja.
He had an impressive start, scoring five goals in his first six Premier League games under Moyes. However, with Beto failing to score again on Saturday, Moyes expressed how much the team is missing Calvert-Lewin.
Moyes said (via Everton’s official website): “We’re getting Broja back up to speed and starting to get all the players back. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] is the one we’re really missing.
Myko and Jesper [Lindstrøm] have small injuries, but the rest are fine, so we hope we can get them ready to play.”
This statement may be concerning for Beto, who is likely aware that the manager is highlighting the absence of a player in his position.
Moyes had initially started Calvert-Lewin in his first three Premier League matches back in charge, and would probably have kept him in the starting XI if not for the injury that opened the door for Beto.
Former Everton player Leon Osman also noted that Moyes has long preferred a striker like Calvert-Lewin, meaning Beto may need to start scoring again to retain his spot in the lineup.
While Calvert-Lewin is expected to be sidelined for a few more weeks, Beto will have an opportunity to prove himself, though with Broja and Youssef Chermiti now available, the pressure is on for the 27-year-old.
