“Absolutely sensational”- Steve Sidwell amazed by what he saw ‘sensational’ Leeds star do v Middlesbrough
Steve Sidwell believes that Leeds United have alleviated any lingering nerves with their impressive first-half display against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
Leeds entered the Championship match at the Riverside Stadium under considerable pressure, having won just one of their last six games and slipped out of the automatic promotion spots.
However, Daniel Farke’s team looked determined to overcome their recent form struggles, starting the match with a strong attacking intent.
The Whites wasted no time taking the lead, with Dan James finishing off a low, precise cross from Manor Solomon on the left side just seconds into the game.
Sidwell praised Leeds’ dominant first-half performance, noting that despite their recent results, they were completely in control against Middlesbrough.
The former Premier League player singled out James for special praise, describing him as “absolutely phenomenal” and “absolutely electric.”
Sidwell also highlighted the impact of the Wales international, commenting on how refreshing it was to see James make runs behind the Middlesbrough defense, stretching their back line.
“The goal has really settled any nerves; they are in total control,” Sidwell said on Sky Sports News (8 April, 8:18 pm).
“[Leeds are] attacking here, it’s cleared by Boro. Dan James has been absolutely electric. Here’s a chance again, [Brenden] Aaronson in the box, cleared by Boro.
“They look so calm in possession, just moving the ball around nicely.”
“Dan James has been sensational in the first 16-17 minutes. He’s scored, had a shot saved by [Mark] Travers, and what’s been refreshing is his runs behind.”
“He drops short, then goes in behind, stretching the Boro defense. He’s been dynamic.”
Farke will likely feel a sense of relief after his team’s first-half performance, despite a disallowed goal from Ao Tanaka in the 34th minute.
Tanaka’s goal was ruled out for offside, though replays suggested he may have been onside, leaving Leeds frustrated.
Despite this, Farke will be pleased with his team’s overall performance in the first half. However, Leeds cannot afford to relax, as they must hold on to their one-goal lead, or ideally extend it, to secure all three points on their return to West Yorkshire.
