Leicester City set an unwanted English Football League record at the King Power Stadium on Monday night after suffering a defeat to Newcastle United.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side endured their eighth consecutive Premier League loss to Newcastle, a streak that has seen them fail to score a single goal. This dismal run has earned them a new EFL record, becoming the first team to lose eight straight games without finding the back of the net.
The match was a nightmare for the hosts from the start, as they fell behind in the second minute when Jacob Murphy scored. Murphy would double the lead less than ten minutes later, leaving Leicester with little hope of a comeback.

A beloved figure who came through the Foxes’ academy and played a pivotal role in their FA Cup victory, Barnes received a warm round of applause from the King Power faithful when his name was announced before kick-off.
He was also greeted with applause when taking a corner in front of the home supporters, who showed their appreciation for the winger who once gave them so many memorable moments. In an unexpected show of respect, even after scoring his sixth goal of the season to put Newcastle 3-0 up, the home fans applauded Barnes, even as the Newcastle fans serenaded him with a chant.
As the away fans sang Barnes’ name to the tune of Joy Division, a small group of Leicester supporters joined in, but their voices were quickly drowned out by boos and jeers aimed at the team and management, not Barnes.
Leicester City Make Unwanted History
With the loss, Leicester are now firmly in the relegation battle, and Van Nistelrooy looked visibly frustrated on the sidelines. Tensions were high, with a banner aimed at director of football Jon Rudkin seen in the home stands. Starting with a 4-0 loss to Newcastle in the reverse fixture, Leicester have now suffered 15 defeats in their last 16 games, with only a solitary win against Tottenham Hotspur in January.
After the match, Van Nistelrooy spoke to Sky Sports about the team’s struggles: “What is worrying is the run of form, the lack of goals, the lack of results we can’t produce. We’re trying different things, different structures, different players in different positions, but the results just aren’t there.”
