“Unacceptable and tough one to take”- Furious Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick delivered honest verdict as Leeds United see off Middlesbrough threat

Head coach Michael Carrick called Middlesbrough’s 1-0 loss to Leeds United a “tough one to take” as the Whites returned to the top of the Championship with a victory at Riverside Stadium.

Daniel James scored his second goal in as many games with a close-range finish just minutes after kick-off, helping Leeds move above Sheffield United and Burnley in the standings. The win could have been more comfortable for the visitors, as Ao Tanaka and Patrick Bamford both had goals incorrectly disallowed for offside, one either side of half-time.

Middlesbrough fought back, creating several chances but lacked the necessary quality and composure in the final third. Carrick spoke to Sky Sports, saying, “We’re bitterly disappointed not to get anything from the game. They’re a quality team with some really talented individuals. I thought we were excellent for most of the game.”

He continued, “We had a poor start which put us in a difficult position, but we responded really well. We built on that in the second half and created plenty of pressure. I thought the goal was coming, we had chances across the box, and we pinned them back but couldn’t find that crucial moment to make the difference.”

“I was pleased with a lot of aspects of our play, but in the end, the moment went their way. It’s disappointing, but it won’t knock us. The season is still very much alive, but it’s a tough one to take.”

Middlesbrough remain in the final play-off spot, but Coventry City could leapfrog them if they win against Portsmouth tomorrow evening.
