Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick expressed disappointment after his side was defeated 1-0 by Leeds United at The Riverside, marking the end of their strong recent form.
Carrick described the result as “definitely deserved” for Leeds and offered a rare comment on the Whites’ performance.
The defeat came after Dan James scored early for Leeds, just two minutes into the match, and the visitors had two goals ruled out due to questionable offside decisions.
While Leeds managed to hold on to their slim lead, Boro missed several opportunities, particularly in the second half.
Carrick felt his team deserved more from the game, acknowledging that the pressure they applied on Leeds was significant.
Carrick pointed out that it had been a long time since he had seen Leeds endure such sustained pressure, further adding to his disappointment that they couldn’t capitalize on this rare vulnerability.
Despite the loss, Carrick found positives in his team’s performance, particularly their ability to create pressure throughout the game.
Speaking to Boro Live after the match, Carrick said, “Overall, I thought we definitely deserved something from the game, and the performance was good.
We put them under a lot of pressure, especially in moments around their box. We just couldn’t find that final finish or the right pass at times.
It was a poor start, conceding so early and so easily, which made it an uphill battle from there.”
He continued, “But I thought we responded really well overall, pushing hard and creating a lot of pressure.
I’ve rarely seen Leeds under that much pressure for such a long period, so that’s something we can take as a positive.
The players are obviously disappointed not to get anything from the game, but we’ll use that frustration to fuel us for the remainder of the season.”
Carrick also praised Leeds’ attacking quality, acknowledging their speed and ability to create danger but felt that Boro had the more dangerous moments in the game that they failed to convert.
