Rangers Show Resilience to Hold Athletic Bilbao to 0-0 Draw Despite Early Red Card
Rangers battled bravely to secure a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao, despite being reduced to 10 men early in the match.
Athletic Bilbao and Alex Berenguer thought they had scored late in the game, but VAR intervened to rule out his goal and award a penalty to the Spanish side, judging that Dujon Sterling had handled the ball in the box.
Liam Kelly, however, saved the penalty, ensuring Rangers stayed level after Robin Propper’s early red card had given them a mountain to climb.
Here are the player ratings for Rangers’ performance:
Liam Kelly – 10
A brave decision by Ferguson to start him over Butland, but Kelly delivered a standout performance.
He wasn’t tested much early on but made a crucial save against Oihan Sancet’s header in the first half.
His penalty save from Berenguer was a heroic moment on his European debut, earning him a perfect 10.
Dujon Sterling – 6
Sterling played a solid role in defence, particularly in the first half. He made a key block to deny Maroan Sannadi a clear shot on goal. Unfortunate to concede a penalty for handball, but Kelly’s save ensured there were no major consequences.
Robin Propper – 2
Propper’s red card came just 12 minutes into the match after a VAR review for a foul on Inaki Williams.
While he may have been unlucky with the upgrade from yellow to red, it was a clumsy decision to give the referee such an important call so early in the game. A disappointing performance.
Leon Balogun – 8
Balogun stepped up after Propper’s dismissal, blocking a dangerous shot from Williams early in the match.
He was solid throughout, clearing every ball that came his way and maintaining a high level of performance until the final whistle.
James Tavernier – 7
Tavernier delivered a free-kick that Bilbao couldn’t properly clear, leading to a decent chance for Dessers. He was solid defensively, keeping Nico Williams quiet throughout the game.
Bailey Rice – 6
Rice, the 18-year-old, had a composed but unspectacular performance, showing great maturity against tough opposition.
Unfortunately, he was forced off due to injury after a collision, and was stretchered off to be replaced by Connor Barron.
Nico Raskin – 7
Raskin displayed his toughness in the midfield, holding his ground in tight situations and demonstrating his quality with the ball under pressure.
Ridvan Yilmaz – 6
After Propper’s red card, Yilmaz shifted into central defence, where he played a solid role despite some nervous moments. He was replaced by Jefte after just over an hour of play.
Vaclav Cerny – 7
Cerny was active in the first half, though he saw less of the ball after Rangers went down to 10 men.
He delivered a brilliant set-piece that Dessers couldn’t convert with a header, and he worked hard defensively throughout the second half.
Cyriel Dessers – 6
Dessers had a couple of half-chances, including a strike that went wide and a header that didn’t hit the target from a dangerous Cerny cross. He was isolated for much of the second half but did well to make the most of limited opportunities.
Ianis Hagi – 6
Hagi worked tirelessly to help Yilmaz defensively, particularly when tasked with containing Williams, and contributed in his defensive duties.
Substitutes:
Connor Barron (for Rice, 67) – 6
Barron came on after Rice’s injury and worked hard in the final 30 minutes. He wasn’t able to provide a spark but put in a diligent performance.
Jefte (for Yilmaz, 67) – 6
Jefte replaced Yilmaz and was seen as a more attacking option. While he was solid defensively, he didn’t make a major attacking impact.
