Ally McCoist Slams Red Card Decision for Rangers’ Robin Propper: “Absolute Nonsense”
Ally McCoist didn’t hold back in his criticism of the red card handed to Rangers defender Robin Propper, calling the decision “absolute nonsense” during their Europa League quarter-final clash with Athletic Bilbao.
The Dutch centre-back was dismissed just 12 minutes into the first leg at Ibrox after a foul on Nico Williams near the edge of the penalty area. Initially shown a yellow card by referee Istvan Kovacs, the decision was later upgraded to a red following a VAR review.
Propper was judged to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity—a violation that, under IFAB rules, warrants a straight red card unless the foul occurs inside the box and the player is clearly attempting to play the ball, in which case the double jeopardy rule applies.
While McCoist acknowledged that the decision aligned with the letter of the law, he strongly disagreed with it in principle.
“By the rules, it’s probably the right call,” he admitted. “But ask anyone who’s played the game, at any level—should that be a red? The overwhelming answer is no.
“I think it’s a clear lack of common sense from the officials. Yes, they’ll say they’re just following the laws, and technically they are. But in terms of football logic? It’s wrong.”
McCoist went on to highlight what he sees as a contradiction in the rules: “If that foul happens inside the penalty area, he doesn’t get sent off. How ridiculous is that?
“You’ve essentially got two sets of rules. It’s nonsense. Absolute nonsense. It’s a tough break for Rangers, really.”
