Leeds United Return to the Top of the Championship
Leeds United climbed back to the summit of the Championship on Tuesday night, overtaking both Burnley and Sheffield United in a thrilling promotion race that’s delivering plenty of drama—especially for Leeds fans, who have endured a rollercoaster few weeks.
The Whites secured a crucial 1-0 away win against Middlesbrough, taking full advantage of Burnley’s draw at Derby County and Sheffield United’s surprise home defeat to Millwall. As a result, Leeds leapfrogged both rivals to reclaim top spot.
Managers Daniel Farke and Chris Wilder were both left frustrated with controversial refereeing calls in their matches, but heading into the weekend, Farke will undoubtedly be in a more upbeat mood.
Wilder’s Sheffield United side, meanwhile, have now suffered back-to-back losses.
Looking ahead, Burnley host Norwich City on Friday night. Saturday will see Sheffield United travel to Plymouth Argyle, while Leeds welcome Preston North End, now managed by former Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom, to Elland Road.
Danny Murphy Tips Leeds for the Title
Speaking on talkSPORT following the reshuffling at the top of the table, former England international and pundit Danny Murphy shared his prediction for the promotion race.
Murphy backed Leeds United to go all the way and claim the Championship title.
“I had a look at the fixtures last night,” Murphy said. “Even though Leeds have only won two of their last seven, their remaining games look quite favourable.
I think they’ll go up now—and I hope they do.” When asked who he’d like to see take the second automatic promotion spot, Murphy added: “I’d love Burnley to do it, for Scotty Parker.”
Burnley’s draw at Derby extended their remarkable unbeaten run in the Championship to 28 games. Even more impressive, they’ve conceded just 12 goals across 41 matches this season.
Fixture Run-In Could Be Key
Despite some recent slip-ups—such as defeats to Portsmouth and struggles against Luton Town—Leeds United’s upcoming fixtures are considered relatively manageable.
Their next opponent, Preston, sits 16th in the table and has only won once in their last nine league games.
The standout fixture in the run-in will be Burnley vs Sheffield United on April 21st.
The outcome of that match could have a major say in who secures automatic promotion—unless Leeds falter and drop out of the race entirely, in which case both Burnley and Sheffield United might go up.
For Farke and his Leeds side, though, the focus remains clear: take each game as it comes.
