The Premier League has clarified why Eberechi Eze’s goal against Manchester City was disallowed, marking the first use of semi-automated offside technology in the league.
According to an official statement: “The referee’s decision to disallow the goal was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as Eze was in an offside position.”
What could have taken VAR officials several minutes to determine manually was resolved within seconds thanks to the new technology.
The same statement, shared via @PLMatchCentre on X, reiterated: “The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR – with Eze in an offside position.”
The system is referred to as “semi-automated” rather than fully automated because final decisions are still reviewed and confirmed by human officials.
Initially tested during the 2021 Club World Cup, the technology gained more attention at the 2022 World Cup. It was swiftly adopted by other top leagues, including Serie A and La Liga. Clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool have already encountered the system in Champions League matches.
Eberechi Eze’s disallowed goal could have seen Crystal Palace take a commanding three-goal lead against Manchester City in what was a thrilling first half. The England international struck early in the 8th minute, with defender Chris Richards doubling the lead 13 minutes later after pouncing on a costly error by City goalkeeper Ederson.
However, the decision to rule out Eze’s second goal appeared to galvanize City. Kevin De Bruyne quickly responded with a free-kick equalizer. The Belgian, who had also struck the post earlier in the game, was making his first appearance since announcing he will leave the club at the end of the season after a decade of service.
Omar Marmoush later equalized, setting the stage for a tense and dramatic second half.
