Paul Heckingbottom Highlights Leeds United’s Major Promotion Asset After Defeat
Paul Heckingbottom has pointed out a crucial factor in Leeds United’s push for automatic promotion following his side’s 2-1 loss at Elland Road.
Speaking after the defeat on Saturday — one of the early kick-offs — the Preston North End manager mentioned to Daniel Farke that Leeds possess a major advantage in the race for the top two.
Leeds got off to a flying start with a stunning fourth-minute strike from Manor Solomon, though Preston quickly equalised just two minutes later. However, by the 14th minute, the hosts were back in front — this time with Solomon turning provider, delivering a pinpoint cross for Jayden Bogle to score.
Despite wasting several clear chances — particularly through Joel Piroe — Leeds managed to hold firm amid a roaring Elland Road atmosphere, especially as news filtered through of Plymouth scoring against promotion rivals Sheffield United.
The Whites are now level on 88 points with Burnley and sit five points ahead of third-place Sheffield United, making their upcoming clash even more significant.
Heckingbottom noted the influence of the Elland Road crowd during the match:
“I was wondering about the cheers from the stands — nothing was really happening in the game, but the fans were reacting to something,” he said.
“I mentioned to Daniel as we walked onto the pitch — as Leeds manager, you’ve got to be delighted Burnley and Sheffield United are facing each other. That’s a huge bonus.”
Leeds’ attacking firepower and the intense atmosphere proved tough for Preston to handle, and Heckingbottom admitted his side’s preparation didn’t translate on the pitch.
“That’s what they do. We prepared for it. We’ve got plenty of players with experience here, who know what to expect,” he added.
“I actually enjoyed the second half. It opened up, we tried to be brave, but we couldn’t carve out the same chances Leeds did.”
Heckingbottom also praised Solomon’s impact:
“We kept stressing not to let him cut inside. He’s come into his own here — a real threat, consistent. Even without Dan James, they bring in Gnonto. It’s a strong squad, especially in that final third — very dangerous.”
