Wolves All But Secure Premier League Safety After Ipswich Win
Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of securing their Premier League status following a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town last weekend.
While their survival isn’t officially confirmed, it would take an extraordinary turn of events for Ipswich to stay up at Wolves’ expense.
Vitor Pereira has fulfilled his short-term objective since taking charge. However, come next season, expectations will rise as he looks to guide the Old Gold into the top half of the table.
A key part of that mission could rest on retaining Matheus Cunha — a player who’s been vital to Wolves this season.
Cunha’s Future Unclear Despite Impressive Season
Matheus Cunha has been a standout performer for Wolves, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists. His contributions have been instrumental in keeping the club out of relegation danger.
Statistically, he ranks among the best in the league. He’s in the top 2% for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes (0.55), the top 7% for total shots per 90 (3.61), and the top 7% for carries into the final third (3.11), underlining his attacking threat.
Cunha’s form has attracted attention from bigger clubs. Manchester United and Arsenal were both linked with the Brazilian during the January transfer window.
With a reported £62.5 million release clause in his contract, Wolves could cash in this summer.
If that happens, it remains to be seen whether Pereira would reinvest in a like-for-like replacement or use the funds to strengthen other parts of the squad.
Ty Barnett Could Be Cunha’s Natural Successor
One option already within the club is rising U21 talent Ty Barnett. The 19-year-old, who primarily plays as a left-winger or attacking midfielder, has shown promise in Wolves’ youth ranks, scoring 12 goals in 59 games.
Barnett’s versatility mirrors Cunha’s — he has even featured as a central striker this season. He signed a contract extension in 2023, keeping him at Molineux until at least 2026, with academy manager Jon Hunter-Barrett praising his creativity, goal threat, and one-on-one ability.
The youngster impressed during this season’s Football League Trophy, where he played against senior teams like Wrexham, Port Vale, and Salford. Over three appearances, he averaged two shots per game, scored once, and completed 80% of his passes — an encouraging sign of his readiness for senior football.
Given his potential, Barnett could be a future star for Wolves. And with Premier League safety all but assured, Pereira may even consider giving the teenager his debut before the season ends.
