Leeds United Boosted as Sheffield United Stumble in Promotion Race
Heading into last weekend, the Championship promotion battle looked set to go down to the wire, with Burnley, Sheffield United, and Leeds United locked in a three-way fight for the two automatic promotion spots.
But the weekend’s events took a surprising turn. Burnley kicked things off with a challenging Friday night clash against Norwich. Despite manager Scott Parker voicing his frustration over the fixture schedule, his side came out on top with a victory.
The pressure was then on Leeds and Sheffield United, who both played in the early kick-off on Saturday. Leeds responded well, securing a vital win at Elland Road over Preston, which pulled them level on points with Burnley.
Wilder Opens Up on Leeds Title Race Message
However, it was a completely different story for Sheffield United. Despite taking an early lead in their away fixture, the Blades collapsed in the second half. Plymouth turned the game around with two quick goals in just seven minutes, handing Wilder’s side a devastating defeat.
Tensions boiled over after the match, with a brief altercation occurring near the tunnel. A visibly frustrated Chris Wilder gathered his players on the pitch for an impromptu team talk. Later, he revealed what he said:
“We have to take ownership of this final week,” Wilder explained. “We were in a great spot after the Coventry win.
“It’s been a tough week, no doubt about that, but now’s not the time to blame each other or throw our arms up.
“Our mentality has to be about fighting and digging in. I told them this was going to be a big week.”
Leeds Now Favourites for Premier League Spot
With Sheffield United’s slip-up, Leeds United have now emerged as strong favourites for automatic promotion. Daniel Farke’s side is now estimated to have a 98% chance of securing a Premier League return. If they can avoid any major stumbles in their final four matches, promotion looks likely.
As for the Blades, their path has become significantly tougher. They still face Cardiff, Burnley, Stoke City, and Blackburn — all teams with plenty at stake as the season nears its conclusion.
