Ally McCoist believes Sheffield United might still have a shot if they beat Burnley, but if Leeds manage to collect just seven points from their final four games, promotion will be sealed — potentially as soon as Monday.
Concerns Linger About Life in the Premier League
Should Leeds go up, the struggles of this season’s promoted teams—Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton—will undoubtedly be on the minds of their ownership group, The 49ers. Despite significant spending, all three clubs have found life in the Premier League extremely challenging.
Southampton and Ipswich each invested over £100 million, while Leicester, hampered by Financial Fair Play rules, spent less but still fell short. On the Stick To Football podcast, Ian Wright voiced his concern for newly promoted sides, specifically mentioning Leeds. He emphasized the growing financial gap between established Premier League clubs and those coming up from the Championship.
“The 17 existing Premier League clubs keep getting stronger,” Wright said. “Whether it’s Leeds, Burnley, or Sheffield United coming up, they’re facing teams like Aston Villa, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford, and Bournemouth – all improving year by year.”
Why Leeds Could Be Different This Time
However, Phil Hay of The Athletic believes Leeds are better equipped to survive than they were under former owner Andrea Radrizzani. The current backing of The 49ers and a new partnership with RedBull are seen as key factors.
BBC’s Adam Pope noted Leeds may need to spend upwards of £100 million, though West Brom boss Tony Mowbray suggested they might even need double that amount. Reports this week revealed The 49ers plan to reinforce the squad in six key areas: goalkeeper, centre-back, left-back, midfield, winger, and striker.
For now, though, all focus remains on securing promotion – starting with Friday’s match.
