Wilder Vows Sheffield United Will “Keep Swinging” in Promotion Race
Chris Wilder has insisted that Sheffield United will continue fighting hard in the race for Premier League promotion, after narrowing the gap on rivals Leeds United and Burnley.
Heading into the Good Friday fixtures, the Blades faced an uphill battle—six points behind second-placed Leeds and reeling from three consecutive defeats. But a much-needed 2-0 win over Cardiff City at Bramall Lane reignited their campaign.
“We’re alive and kicking,” Wilder declared after the game. “I told the players the first win is always the hardest to get. Cardiff had something to play for, but so do we—and we showed that today.”
Wilder admitted he felt relieved when the second goal went in, knowing that a single moment could have brought Cardiff back into the contest. “They had nothing to lose, but we stayed focused. I’m proud of this honest group—they’ve been through tough times and they’re still standing.”
Still in the Fight
Reflecting on the previous run of poor form, Wilder acknowledged the team’s struggles but emphasized their determination. “It’s been a tough week in terms of performances and results, but we’re not done yet. We’re still swinging.”
Their win kept the gap to Burnley at six points, as Scott Parker’s side beat nine-man Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road. With Leeds playing Oxford United later in the evening, Wilder’s side had momentarily upped the pressure on Daniel Farke’s men.

With a crucial showdown against Burnley coming up on Easter Monday, Wilder is urging his players to keep the momentum going. “Now we focus on Monday. It’s all to play for. We wanted to be competing deep into the season, and we’ve got to show up with energy, belief, and personality.”
Wilder also pointed to the importance of confidence heading into the final stretch. “Belief is huge for us. Hopefully, this win gives us the lift we need.”
