Oxford United Ready to Tackle Championship’s Toughest Tests, Says Gary Rowett
Oxford United head coach Gary Rowett believes his team has already proven this month that they can rise to the biggest challenges the Sky Bet Championship has to offer.
Just under two weeks ago, the U’s pulled off a 1-0 home victory over then-league leaders Sheffield United—a performance that demonstrated their ability to compete with the division’s elite.
That scenario repeats itself today, as Leeds United arrive at the Kassam Stadium sitting top of the table at the start of Good Friday. The match, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, promises high stakes, with both clubs pushing for crucial points—Oxford at one end of the table, and Leeds at the other.
Rowett said:
“This is as big as it gets. You’re going up against the league leaders—a team stacked with quality and depth, led by a manager who’s earned multiple promotions from this level.
“Our challenge remains the same. It’ll be an electric atmosphere at home, and we understand how vital this game is—not just for Leeds, but for us too.
“We’re deep into the season now. These are the matches where you’ve got to step up and deliver big performances, just like we did against Sheffield United.
“Going into that game, we knew it was going to be a tough climb—but we managed it, and that gives us confidence. It proves we can go toe-to-toe with top teams, although we’re well aware today’s task is just as big.”
When asked whether the win against Sheffield United could serve as a template, Rowett explained:
“It gives us belief, sure, but every game starts from scratch. Different team, different tactics, a fresh challenge.
“It doesn’t get any easier. What that game showed us is that if we execute the game plan well and get the key moments right, we can absolutely compete—even with the best.
“That’s all you can aim for as a manager. And as a player, you want to feel like you’ve got a fighting chance—even though you know there will be stretches of the game where the opposition dominate, simply because they’ve got top-tier talent.
“Tactically, these teams are sharp. Whether it’s Leeds, Sheffield United, or Burnley, the challenges are consistent. They’ve all got attacking threats and plenty of quality options in their squad.”
