McKenna Admits Red Card Was Understandable After Davis’ Challenge on Saka
Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna acknowledged there wasn’t much room for protest over Leif Davis’ red card during his side’s 4-0 defeat to Arsenal this afternoon.
With Ipswich already trailing 2-0, Davis was sent off in the 32nd minute for a late tackle from behind on Bukayo Saka, catching the Arsenal winger on the Achilles. The decision enraged the Portman Road faithful, who went on to boo Saka every time he touched the ball.
“At the time, I didn’t think it was a red,” McKenna admitted. “It was on the far side of the pitch, and maybe that was influenced by knowing Leif – he’s not a malicious player. I don’t think there was any intent to hurt Saka.”
“But after watching it back, it’s clearly a high challenge. Again, I don’t believe there was intent, but it’s still a dangerous tackle, and I understand why the referee gave it. Once it’s shown, it’s not going to be overturned, so we can’t really argue too much.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who only recently welcomed Saka back from a hamstring issue, also commented on the incident.
“I don’t think it was intentional, but it was dangerous,” said Arteta. “Saka didn’t see it coming and couldn’t protect himself.
He’s a bit sore, but overall he’s okay. When your foot is planted like that, you always fear the worst—but thankfully he’s fine.”
