Premier League Clarifies Leif Davis Red Card in Arsenal Clash
The Premier League has clarified the reasoning behind Leif Davis’ red card for his late tackle on Bukayo Saka during Arsenal’s Premier League match against Ipswich Town.
The Premier League has provided clarification on the red card shown to Leif Davis during Arsenal’s visit to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town.
The Ipswich full-back was dismissed in the 32nd minute with Arsenal already 2-0 up, courtesy of goals from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.
Referee Chris Kavanagh issued Davis a straight red card after a reckless challenge on Bukayo Saka near the halfway line, where Davis caught the Arsenal winger high on the back of his ankle. Saka needed treatment but was able to continue.
VAR reviewed the incident but concluded that no on-field check was necessary.
The Premier League later explained the decision in a social media post, stating:
“The referee’s decision to send off Davis for serious foul play was checked and upheld by VAR. The challenge was considered to have endangered the safety of an opponent.”
Saka was booed by the home fans every time he touched the ball following the incident and missed several chances to increase Arsenal’s advantage before the break.
Despite the hostile reception, Saka remained a key figure, having played a major role in both of Arsenal’s goals.
At the time of Davis’ dismissal, Ipswich were already trailing 2-0. Arsenal needed a win to keep their title hopes alive and delay Liverpool’s potential title celebration in their game later that day at Leicester.
Former Arsenal defender Matt Upson criticized Davis’ tackle during commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live, saying:
“I completely understand the red card. When you break it down, it’s clear—it looks very intentional. That’s a poor challenge from Davis. He’s nowhere near the ball and it’s dangerous for the opponent.”
