“Kill us”- Chris Wilder breaks silence on Leeds United securing Premier League promotion
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has praised both Leeds United and Burnley after they secured automatic promotion from the Championship in what he called an “insane” season.
Leeds are already celebrating their return to the Premier League after a commanding 6-0 win over Stoke City at Elland Road. Their promotion was later confirmed when Burnley edged out the Blades 2-1, leaving Sheffield United mathematically unable to catch the top two with just two games remaining.
Despite his team’s late push, Wilder showed class in defeat, acknowledging the quality of his promotion rivals.
“Credit to those two teams—reaching 100 points shows just how competitive this league has been,” Wilder said after the loss at Turf Moor. “We’ve proven we’re the third-best team in the division.”
He reflected on the match and the season as a whole: “We gave it everything up to the 44th game. We created good chances, but the goals we gave away cost us. One poor clearance and a penalty turned the game in their favour. To go up automatically this year, you needed 95, 96, maybe 97 points. It’s been a crazy season.”
While Leeds and Burnley are now level on 94 points, the title race remains alive. Leeds hold a significant advantage in goal difference—14 goals ahead—giving them the upper hand as the final two fixtures approach.
As for Sheffield United, their hopes of finishing in the top two were dashed after taking just three points from the last 15 available. Their only route to promotion now is through the play-offs.
Looking ahead, Wilder remains optimistic: “We’ve got some massive games coming. That home play-off match at Bramall Lane will be electric. We’ll pick ourselves up and go again.
“Our aim now is to finish with 90-plus points. That’s the target.”
