His Leicester City side were beaten 1-0 at home by Liverpool, a result that confirmed their relegation to the Championship.
Van Nistelrooy, who took the managerial reins at Leicester in November after leaving United, has struggled to turn things around, with two extended losing streaks marking his tenure.
Despite their current frustrations, United supporters still hold van Nistelrooy in high regard and will no doubt feel for him during this difficult period.
According to The Telegraph, he is now expected to meet with Leicester’s hierarchy to discuss his future, with a potential departure from the club on the horizon.
Relegation also means Leicester may have to offload players to stabilize their finances, and one name drawing attention is goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
Manchester United have previously shown interest in the Danish shot-stopper, who could become a summer target.
Back in January, reports indicated that United were exploring options to strengthen their goalkeeping department, and Hermansen’s name was on the list.
Chelsea are also monitoring him, especially with former Leicester boss Enzo Maresca now in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Hermansen has stood out this season despite Leicester’s struggles, making 101 saves—ranking him among the Premier League’s top performers. Praised for his composure and skill with the ball at his feet, former Leicester player Matt Piper described him as “wonderful” in possession.
With Danish players Patrick Dorgu and Rasmus Højlund already at Old Trafford, Hermansen could be the next Scandinavian talent to join United as the club looks to bolster its goalkeeping options this summer.
