Leeds United Secure Promotion—But Can Farke Keep Them in the Premier League?
With promotion to the Premier League now secured, the spotlight immediately shifts to whether Leeds United and manager Daniel Farke can survive in the top flight next season.
The Whites clinched automatic promotion on Easter Monday with a stunning 6-0 win over Stoke City at Elland Road.
Sheffield United needed to match that result to stay in contention but fell 2-1 to Burnley, sealing their place in the Championship play-offs.
Leeds and Burnley, both on 94 points, are now confirmed as Premier League-bound.
Leeds still have two games left—against Bristol City and Plymouth—and the team, led by Ethan Ampadu’s determined attitude, is not just aiming for promotion, but to lift the Championship trophy.
Chairman Paraag Marathe praised the “relentless” Daniel Farke after the promotion was confirmed. However, questions remain about Farke’s ability to adapt at the top level.
His previous Premier League record with Norwich City is far from convincing—just six wins in 49 games.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, pundit Chris Sutton raised doubts about Leeds’ survival chances, warning that Farke may be too committed to his attacking style.
“It’s going to be really tough,” Sutton said. “Teams like Ipswich, Leicester, and Southampton have conceded more than two goals per game—it’s almost impossible to survive the Premier League with that kind of defensive record.”
Sutton emphasized that securing safety in the first season is all about finding a foothold: “Leeds fans expect expansive football, but they need to tighten up defensively. I’m not sure Farke will change—and I’m not convinced he has the players to.”
While Farke’s Norwich record is poor, some believe it’s not a fair comparison. At Carrow Road, he had limited resources. At Leeds, things could be different.
Journalist Phil Hay has suggested the club’s new ownership group—the 49ers and Red Bull—are ready to invest.
BBC’s Adam Pope estimates that Leeds will need to spend upwards of £100 million to have a fighting chance in the Premier League.
With strong financial backing and smart recruitment, survival is possible—but nothing is guaranteed.
