Chris Wilder Criticises Burnley’s Security Following Chaotic Scenes at Turf Moor
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has voiced strong criticism of Burnley’s handling of post-match security, claiming he and his players were left feeling unprotected at Turf Moor.
The incident followed Sheffield United’s 2-1 defeat to Burnley on Monday evening, a result that secured Premier League promotion for both Burnley and Leeds United. After the final whistle, a number of Burnley fans stormed the pitch, with some allegedly directing abusive remarks towards the Sheffield United players.
Wilder condemned the lack of adequate stewarding at full-time, stating that assurances made prior to the match were not upheld.
“We were told by the referee that stewards would be around us at the final whistle,” Wilder said in his post-match press conference. “But they just disappeared — completely vanished.”
Midfielder Hamza Choudhury was reportedly involved in a confrontation with fans, while other players rushed towards the tunnel and changing rooms for safety.
“It got quite frightening out there,” Wilder added. “People were running onto the pitch doing all sorts. Sure, emotions were high, but we were offered no protection from the club or the stewards — not at all.”
He noted that even the referee acknowledged the lack of security presence. “When 30, 40, maybe 50 people are charging at you, shouting and behaving aggressively, it’s hard just to leave the pitch safely,” he said. “I’d be shocked if there are any consequences for it, to be honest.”
In contrast, supporters at Leeds United’s earlier match against Stoke City remained in the stands after their team’s emphatic 6-0 win. Leeds had to wait for the outcome at Turf Moor to confirm their automatic promotion due to the later kickoff.
Further Tensions After Final Whistle
The unrest at Turf Moor didn’t end on the pitch. After the players had cleared the area, some Burnley fans reportedly approached the Sheffield United team coach, leading to further verbal altercations.
