Chris Wilder Responds to Leeds United’s X-Rated Chant Following Promotion Party
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has responded to the explicit chant directed at him by Leeds United players during their Premier League promotion celebrations earlier this week.
Leeds secured their return to the top flight after a dominant 6-0 win over Stoke City, followed by Sheffield United’s defeat to Burnley. The combination of results confirmed Leeds’ automatic promotion and pushed the Blades into the play-offs—sparking celebrations across Yorkshire.
Amid the celebrations, Leeds striker Patrick Bamford was caught on camera leading a chant that labelled Wilder with a derogatory term, with fans quickly joining in. Former Sheffield United player Jayden Bogle was also seen dancing during the chant, adding fuel to the fire.
Many saw the moment as a bit of playful revenge, considering Wilder’s infamous “muppets from Leeds” comment during the 2019 promotion race, when Sheffield United pipped Leeds to the Premier League.
Wilder Takes the High Road, Reveals Chat with Bamford
Speaking ahead of Sheffield United’s upcoming trip to Stoke City, Wilder was asked whether the Leeds celebrations added any extra motivation for his side. His response was calm and composed.
“I don’t need any of that as motivation,” Wilder said. “I’m a big boy. If you give it, you’ve got to take it, and I’ve always done that. Teams have their moments, and this one is theirs.”
Wilder also revealed that Bamford reached out to explain the situation. “I had a conversation with Pat yesterday. I’ve got no issue with it. I’m not sure about the words used by a fellow pro, but I appreciated and respected the fact he gave me a call. We spoke for 20 minutes,” Wilder said. “I also spoke to Daniel [Farke] for half an hour—he’s a top guy and they’re a top football club.”
Wilder acknowledged Leeds’ success, saying, “I’d swap places with them in a heartbeat, but that’s not how it turned out. For both teams to get 94 points is a massive achievement. We’ve kept the race alive until game 44, and I’m proud of that.”
Wilder: “Football Needs These Moments”
Wilder, no stranger to enjoying derby victories himself—especially after celebrating United’s double over Sheffield Wednesday this season—acknowledged that these moments are part of the sport.
“Absolutely, 100 percent,” he added when asked if football would be dull without moments like these.
