With the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules in mind, Leeds have reportedly been advised to prepare for a nine-figure spending window.
One of the more surprising suggestions comes from Merson, who has floated the idea of Leeds pursuing Raheem Sterling.
The England international, currently on loan at Arsenal from Chelsea, is expected to return to Stamford Bridge after failing to make a significant impact at the Emirates.
Merson: Sterling Could Be the Right Fit for Leeds
Sterling has struggled to recapture the form he displayed at Manchester City since joining Chelsea and has been deemed surplus to requirements by incoming manager Enzo Maresca.
Despite his hefty £350,000-a-week wages, Merson believes a move to Leeds could benefit both the player and the club. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“He needs to play regular football to get into rhythm. At Arsenal, he’s come into games that lack fluency—it’s tough for him. His time there is over.
If I were Leeds, I’d look at Raheem. He brings experience to a young team, is great in the dressing room, and is a real team player. It could be a smart move for both sides.”
Does Sterling Make Sense for Leeds Right Now?
There’s no denying that a name like Sterling would bring excitement to Elland Road. However, there’s debate about whether he’s the right fit—especially with Daniel James currently enjoying a resurgence under Daniel Farke.
James has been nominated for the Championship Player of the Season and is viewed by many as a key figure for Leeds going into the Premier League. Replacing him with Sterling, who may be past his best, could raise eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
While Sterling at his peak would undoubtedly elevate the squad, there are questions about whether he can rediscover that form. Given his high wages and uncertain impact, Leeds may find better value elsewhere in the market.
