Chris Wilder Responds to Speculation Over Daniel Farke’s Future at Leeds
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has weighed in on the speculation surrounding Leeds United boss Daniel Farke’s future, calling the idea of sacking him after securing promotion “ridiculous.” However, he acknowledges that pressure within the game has intensified over the years.
Reports emerged on Wednesday suggesting that Leeds’ ownership group, 49ers Enterprises, have concerns over Farke’s ability to keep the club in the Premier League next season. While they are reportedly exploring potential alternatives, any decision is unlikely unless there’s confidence in a suitable replacement. Leeds United declined to comment, but insiders maintain that the club’s sole focus is on securing the Championship title before the season ends.
The rumors sparked strong backlash from many fans, although some agree with the concerns raised.
Farke’s Premier League record has drawn scrutiny in the past. While at Norwich City, he became the first manager to lose 15 consecutive top-flight games — including a 10-game losing streak in the 2019/20 relegation season and five more consecutive losses in 2021/22, followed by another defeat.
Despite that, Farke is expected to have more financial support at Leeds than he did at Norwich, and a large portion of the fanbase believes he deserves another shot in the Premier League.
Speaking at a Thursday press conference, Wilder, who spoke with Farke following Leeds’ promotion, addressed the situation.
“The game has changed in many ways — expectations are different now,” Wilder said. “I had a half-hour chat with Dan and really enjoyed it. He’s a good guy, and what he’s done is a massive achievement.”
He continued: “Leeds isn’t the easiest club to manage. It’s got a lot going for it, but there’s also a lot of pressure. He probably deals with more than most. To football people, the idea of sacking him sounds ridiculous — but outside of that inner circle, these things happen, and we all have to accept and deal with them.”
Wilder also recently spoke with Farke after an interaction with Patrick Bamford, who was seen leading chants about Wilder during Monday’s promotion celebrations.
