Tottenham’s Hidden Gem Now Worth More Than Van de Ven – You Won’t Believe Who It Is!
It’s an unfortunate reality that things are unraveling for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Australian manager’s early days in North London were filled with promise. A remarkable ten-game unbeaten run even saw Spurs briefly sit atop the Premier League.
But this season has taken a drastic turn for the worse. While a Europa League triumph is still technically possible, there’s a growing sense that Postecoglou’s time in charge may be nearing its end.
Still, amidst the setbacks, the former Celtic boss has made some outstanding signings—one of whom has now surpassed even Micky van de Ven in market value.
Postecoglou’s Most Impressive Signings
Before diving into that standout player, it’s worth highlighting a few of Postecoglou’s best acquisitions—starting with what might be one of the top bargains in recent memory: Lucas Bergvall.
The Swedish midfield talent cost Spurs just £8.5 million in the winter, and since joining the first team this summer, his value has skyrocketed. Football Transfers currently estimates him to be worth €31.3m (around £27m).
It’s no surprise why. At just 19, the player journalist Mitch Fretton has called “generational” has already featured in 44 matches across all competitions, contributing one goal and four assists—often outshining more experienced teammates in the midfield.
In defence, another Postecoglou gem has been Micky van de Ven.
Signed for around £43m in summer 2023, the Dutch centre-back has struggled with injuries but has impressed whenever he’s been fit.
Described as a “complete & dominant” defender by scout Jacek Kulig, Van de Ven’s blistering pace is a key asset in Spurs’ high defensive line. In fact, he broke the Premier League sprint speed record with a 37.38 km/h dash against Brentford.
His market value has since climbed to €62m (about £53m), an impressive leap—yet not the biggest among Postecoglou’s signings.
The Signing Worth Even More Than Van de Ven
Some might guess Dominic Solanke or Brennan Johnson as Spurs’ most valuable player under Postecoglou, but the top spot actually goes to teenage prodigy Archie Gray.
The versatile youngster was signed from Leeds United for around £30m last summer, and in less than a year, his valuation has soared. Football Transfers now places him at €72.5m (roughly £62m)—a jump of £32m and £9m more than Van de Ven.
That might seem surprising, but it reflects Gray’s incredible rise. Despite limited minutes in recent weeks, the England youth international has been one of Spurs’ most impressive players this season.
Due to injuries in the squad, Gray—naturally a central midfielder—was forced to cover in defence. He’s played 19 matches at centre-back, eight at right-back, five at left-back, and only three in his usual defensive midfield spot. Talent scout Kulig’s label of him as a “Swiss army knife” seems entirely appropriate.
This season has tested Tottenham’s young talents more than anyone could have expected, but Gray has stood out. He’s emerged stronger and more valuable, embodying the potential of Spurs’ next generation.
