Junior Firpo’s Leeds United Future in Doubt Despite Promotion
Leeds United may be without Junior Firpo in the Premier League next season, despite the club securing promotion back to the top flight at Elland Road.
The former Barcelona left-back has played an important role in Leeds’ Championship campaign, notably scoring in their 6-0 thrashing of Stoke City on April 21. However, Firpo’s contract is entering its final months, and without a new deal, he’s set to leave the club next summer.
With promotion confirmed after two seasons away, Leeds’ ownership group, 49ers Enterprises, now turn their attention to planning for life back in the Premier League.
Firpo to Discuss Future After Season Ends
Firpo has made it clear that talks about his future are on hold until the end of the season. The 28-year-old has remained focused on securing promotion but acknowledges discussions with the club are now imminent.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post on April 25, Firpo said:
“Last time we spoke, I probably told you I was focused on promotion. That’s done now. But I don’t know. I think it’s something to speak with the club about after the season, when they have clearer plans. Let’s see what happens.”
At this point, his future remains undecided, and the ball is in the club’s court.
Leeds Must Build a Premier League-Ready Squad
Given Firpo’s improvement since Leeds’ relegation in 2023 and his top-flight experience, many feel he deserves a new contract. With Premier League survival the goal, keeping experienced players like Firpo could prove vital.
Leeds have already been linked with potential reinforcements, including West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek—evidence that the club is targeting Premier League-proven talent.
Although Leeds dominated the Championship, the Premier League presents a different level of challenge. Last season’s promoted sides, Southampton and Leicester, are already dropping back down, while Ipswich are struggling.
To avoid a similar fate, the 49ers will need to back Daniel Farke with a competitive squad this summer. Retaining players like Firpo could be an important step in that direction.
