Richard Keys Reacts as Chelsea Edge Everton at Half-Time
Richard Keys didn’t hold back his opinion after Chelsea went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead over Everton during their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on April 26.
It’s been a tough first half for the Toffees, who fell behind when Nicolas Jackson fired Chelsea ahead with a long-range effort in the 27th minute.
David Moyes’ side struggled to make an impact in attack, failing to register a single shot on target and barely testing Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Controversy Over Missed Penalty Call
Everton were left feeling aggrieved after being denied a penalty following a collision between Sanchez and Vitalii Mykolenko inside the Chelsea box late in the first half.
The clash, which occurred around the 39th minute, left both players needing treatment. Referee Chris Kavanagh opted to award a free-kick to Chelsea, sparking debate.
Replays clearly showed Sanchez’s arm striking Mykolenko in the face, prompting strong claims for a spot-kick.
Veteran broadcaster Richard Keys was among those who felt Everton were hard done by, taking to social media to vent his frustration. He argued that Sanchez had lost control and should have been penalised.
“That’s got to be a penalty,” Keys posted on X (April 26). “The keeper did not have possession there – he’d already spilled the ball.”
Moyes Seeks Response to Avoid Back-to-Back Losses
With Everton on course for a second straight defeat – something that hasn’t happened under Moyes since his arrival in January – the manager made changes in search of a turnaround.
Carlos Alcaraz replaced Iliman Ndiaye at the break, followed by a triple substitution just after the hour mark. Beto, who struggled in the first half, was among those withdrawn.
Moyes will be hoping the fresh legs can inspire a response and help his side salvage at least a point against Enzo Maresca’s men.
