Lee Hendrie: Premier League Ambitions Could Lure Kieran McKenna Away from Ipswich
Lee Hendrie believes that Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna could be tempted to leave the club this summer if a Premier League opportunity arises, despite the Tractor Boys’ recent relegation.
Ipswich’s return to the top flight has been a harsh reality check. With just four matches left and only one league win in 2025, they sit 15 points behind 17th-placed West Ham, making survival all but impossible.
Yet, McKenna’s reputation remains largely intact. His back-to-back promotions with the club are still fresh in the minds of supporters, and the club is expected to push for an immediate return to the Premier League next season.
With a net spend of over £107 million last summer, Ipswich are likely to be among the favorites for promotion from the Championship.
However, that plan could be threatened if top-flight clubs come calling. Last season, Ipswich resisted interest from Brighton, Chelsea, and Manchester United to retain McKenna.
According to Football Insider, they’re bracing for more offers this summer.
Hendrie Predicts Summer Interest in McKenna
Speaking to Football League World, Lee Hendrie said McKenna’s strong track record and popularity at Portman Road make him a prime target.
“Clubs are going to be interested. He’s been successful, and even after relegation, his reputation hasn’t really taken a hit,” Hendrie said.
“Ipswich stuck by him this season, which speaks volumes. He’s liked at the club, and there’s a real chance they bounce straight back.
Even if some players leave, he can attract quality to a club with a big fanbase and strong foundations.”
Hendrie added that while McKenna seems committed to the club, any Premier League offer could be hard to ignore.
“He’s shown loyalty before by staying in the Championship, but if a top-flight club comes knocking, it’s a tough decision.
That’s where most managers want to be,” he said. “From what I hear, he wants to stay. Ipswich could bounce back and give it another real go.”
Ipswich Eager to Keep Their Man
McKenna has been central to Ipswich’s rise from League One to the Premier League, and despite a difficult 2024–25 season, the club’s leadership has stood by him.
That loyalty could be rewarded if he opts to stay and lead the promotion charge once again.
While interest from other clubs is expected, McKenna may not be swayed unless a truly compelling project is offered. Ipswich’s ambition remains clear: establish themselves as a Premier League club.
Relegation may be a setback, but with McKenna at the helm, it could simply be a stepping stone in a longer journey.
