Leeds United Made Late Move for Eric Dier Before Monaco Switch
Leeds United reportedly attempted to sign Eric Dier ahead of his expected move to AS Monaco this summer, with the England international holding discussions with the Yorkshire club before ultimately deciding to leave Bayern Munich for the French principality.
Despite Leeds boasting a strong defensive record this season—conceding just 29 goals, a tally that would have broken the Championship clean sheet record if not for Burnley’s remarkable campaign—manager Daniel Farke is already planning for Premier League reinforcements.
His interest in Dier, a seasoned centre-back with leadership qualities, underscores the need for experience at the top level.
According to TBR Football, Leeds made enquiries about signing Dier before he agreed terms with Monaco.
The 30-year-old had joined Bayern on a six-month loan in January, which became permanent in the summer.
However, after just a year in Germany, he’s expected to sign a two-year deal with Monaco when the transfer window opens.
Leeds, newly promoted under Farke, sealed their Premier League return last week and could finish with 100 points if they beat Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
With promotion secured, attention has now turned to summer recruitment, with the club keen to avoid the fate of many promoted teams who are relegated after just one season.
Leeds currently rely on Ethan Ampadu, Pascal Struijk, and Joe Rodon in central defence, and Dier’s top-flight experience would have added valuable depth.
The former Tottenham defender made 274 Premier League appearances and scored 12 goals, alongside 91 outings in other competitions.
His profile fits the mold of what Farke appears to be targeting as he prepares to guide Leeds through a challenging return to the top tier.
