Wolves Fall to Man City as Matheus Nunes Faces Hostile Reception from Visiting Fans
Wolves saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Former Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes was met with boos throughout the evening from the travelling supporters.
Coming into the game in excellent form following a 3-0 win over Leicester City, Wolves started brightly and looked threatening in the early stages. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde missed a clear-cut chance that could have changed the course of the match. However, it was Kevin De Bruyne’s signature strike that ultimately separated the two sides.
On a night where midfielder Marshall Munetsi struggled and drew criticism from fans, the main focus of supporter frustration was directed at Nunes, whose exit from Wolves last summer remains a sore subject.
Nunes Booed Every Time He Touched the Ball
Nunes left Wolves under controversial circumstances in 2023, pushing through a £53 million move to Manchester City by refusing to train. His actions were widely condemned at the time, including by pundit Ally McCoist, who criticized the player for abandoning his teammates and fans.
Unsurprisingly, Wolves fans made their feelings known. According to Sky Sports News’ Anton Toloui, Nunes was loudly booed each time he received the ball, while ironic cheers echoed from the away end whenever he lost possession or was beaten by an opponent. Journalist Liam Keen noted that Nunes was even jeered before kick-off when his image appeared on the stadium’s big screen.
Guardiola Repurposes Nunes as Full-Back
While City paid a hefty fee for Nunes, his performances in midfield have been underwhelming. Pep Guardiola has since converted him into a full-back, acknowledging the player’s limitations in central areas.
“He’s not a player for the middle—he lacks composure and awareness,” Guardiola admitted, though he praised Nunes for his defensive efforts out wide, especially in defending crosses and showing physical presence.
Wolves Have Moved On
With Joao Gomes and Andre anchoring the midfield and Nelson Semedo impressing at right wing-back, Wolves appear to be thriving without Nunes. Their recent form and team cohesion suggest they don’t miss the Portuguese international—either on the pitch or off it.
