Jose Mourinho Rejected Chance to Take Over at Leeds United, Says Richard Keys
Former Manchester United boss José Mourinho was reportedly offered the Leeds United managerial job but declined the opportunity, according to beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys.
Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League last weekend, clinching the Championship title with a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle. They finished the season on 100 points—level with Burnley—but boasted a superior goal difference, thanks to an impressive 95 goals and just four league defeats all season.
Despite Daniel Farke guiding the team to the title, speculation persisted about whether he would remain in charge, given his underwhelming track record in the Premier League with Norwich City. Concerns over Leeds’ chances of avoiding relegation next season reportedly led to internal discussions about a potential managerial change.
According to Keys, Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe offered the job to Mourinho before eventually backing Farke publicly. Writing in a blog post (via Give Me Sport), Keys claimed:
“What [Marathe is] not saying is he started the speculation by offering Farke’s job to Jose Mourinho. I know that for a fact. It was Mourinho who actually ended the speculation by turning the offer down.”
Keys added that Mourinho wasn’t convinced by Leeds’ prospects of staying in the top flight:
“Sadly, Marathe couldn’t convince Mourinho that Leeds won’t be fighting a relegation battle next season. That’s not something the Special One wants. Perhaps he’s right. Perhaps he agrees with Wenger, but it’s a pity.”
Had he accepted, it would have marked a dramatic return to the Premier League—and to one of Manchester United’s fierce rivals—for the 62-year-old, whose career has included stints with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and more recently, Tottenham, Roma, and current club Fenerbahce.
Mourinho’s name has also been floated in connection with the vacant managerial role at Rangers, where Barry Ferguson is currently serving as interim coach.
