“I know exactly who Leeds United manager is but forget Mourinho”- Richard Keys names the manager Leeds United approach to replace Daniel Farke

Jose Mourinho Was Approached to Replace Daniel Farke at Leeds United, Claims Richard Keys

Reports had linked Jose Mourinho with a potential move to replace Daniel Farke at Leeds United, and sports presenter Richard Keys insists this was more than speculation — it was a fact.

Following Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League, 49ers Enterprises were reportedly evaluating their managerial options, concerned about Farke’s previous struggles in the top flight with Norwich City.

Amid the rumors, Mourinho’s name emerged as a serious contender for the Leeds job. However, Paraag Marathe, chairman of Leeds United, publicly backed Farke and appeared to put an end to the speculation.

But according to Keys, Marathe himself initiated the uncertainty by making a direct offer to Mourinho for the managerial role.

Keys: Mourinho Turned Leeds Down

On his blog (5 May), Keys wrote that Marathe personally approached Mourinho but failed to persuade him to take the job. The Portuguese manager was not convinced that Leeds would avoid a relegation battle next season and ultimately declined the offer.

“Marathe now proudly claims he ended the speculation by reaffirming his support for Farke,” Keys said. “But what he hasn’t admitted is that he started it by offering Mourinho the job. I know that for a fact.”

He continued, “Mourinho would’ve been a thrilling appointment at Elland Road. The Premier League always benefits from his presence. But he wasn’t sold on Leeds’ prospects of staying up — and that’s not a challenge he wants right now.”

Farke Deserved Stability Amid Leeds Uncertainty

Despite the speculation, Farke’s achievements this season — guiding Leeds to the Championship title — suggest he earned the right to lead the club into their Premier League campaign. His past record with Norwich may be a concern, but his recent success should have brought clarity about his future.

Rather than searching for a replacement, Leeds’ leadership should focus on strengthening the squad for survival in the top tier.

Even a high-profile manager like Mourinho would struggle without the right players. Though still a respected figure in football, Mourinho is now managing Fenerbahce after less successful spells at Manchester United and Tottenham.

As Farke looks set to continue at Elland Road, the real test will be whether the club provides him with the resources to succeed in the Premier League.
