Simon Grayson Backs Ao Tanaka for Top-Flight Success
One player who’s made a strong case to be part of Leeds’ Premier League plans is Ao Tanaka.
Signed from Fortuna Düsseldorf last summer, the Japanese midfielder had initial doubters due to his limited experience—having only played in Japan and Germany’s second division.
But Tanaka quickly silenced critics, becoming a fan favourite and earning the club’s Players’ Player of the Season award. He was also named in the Championship Team of the Season.
Former Leeds boss Simon Grayson recently told Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast that Tanaka is fully prepared for Premier League football.
“Ao Tanaka is a class act,” Grayson said. “He’s composed, reads the game brilliantly, covers ground well, and handles the ball comfortably.
For £4 million, he’s a bargain. I believe he’s ready for the Premier League right now.”
Some Concerns Remain Over Tanaka’s Premier League Suitability
Despite his accolades, there are reportedly some figures at Leeds who question whether Tanaka can physically handle the rigours of the Premier League.
His form dipped slightly toward the end of the season, sparking concerns about consistency at the highest level.
Tanaka, however, appears undeterred. The £3.4 million signing posted a heartfelt message on Instagram this week, pledging to work even harder to prove himself in the top flight.
His agent has also expressed full confidence in Tanaka’s readiness for the challenge ahead.
And while many players in the current squad may face uncertainty, Tanaka looks poised to retain his starting role as Leeds embark on their Premier League journey.
