He added, “No one expected us to be pushing for promotion this year. Just making the play-offs was a stretch goal. Le Bris has done a fantastic job and, even if we fall short, he absolutely deserves another shot next season.”

Should Sunderland fall short in the play-offs, it’s likely Le Bris will be given another season to finish the job. Considering the strength of teams like Leeds, Burnley, and Sheffield United, automatic promotion was always going to be a big challenge.
The team’s early-season success may have inflated expectations beyond what was realistic.
Still, the way Sunderland’s form collapsed is concerning. Losses to teams like Swansea, QPR, and Oxford were unexpected and unacceptable for a side with promotion ambitions.
Momentum often plays a decisive role in the play-offs—sometimes even more so than league position.
If poor form proves costly, criticism of Le Bris will be inevitable. However, calling time on his tenure after such progress would feel unfair.
All things considered, Sunderland’s 2024–25 campaign should still be viewed as a step forward.
