Wolves fans had high hopes for Matheus Cunha heading into the match against Brighton, but the Brazilian forward failed to deliver, turning in a lackluster performance in the 2-0 defeat.
Cunha has been at the center of transfer rumors following an impressive 17-goal campaign in the 2024/25 season. Manchester United are reportedly leading the race for the 25-year-old, who may be nearing the end of his time at Molineux.
However, Saturday’s game was one to forget for the former Atletico Madrid attacker. He conceded a penalty that Danny Welbeck converted in the first half and consistently overplayed in possession. His struggles led head coach Vitor Pereira to substitute him around the hour mark.
Pereira Rethinks Cunha’s Role
In a surprising tactical switch, Goncalo Guedes was given his first start since Wolves’ 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in February, stepping into the striker role while Cunha dropped back into his favored No. 10 position. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was benched to accommodate the reshuffle.
With Jorgen Strand Larsen back from injury and named among the substitutes, Pereira’s decision to start Guedes reflected a growing realization: Cunha is not suited to lead the line. Unlike a traditional striker, Cunha thrives when operating deeper, creating chances rather than finishing them in the box.
His ineffective display against Manchester City further highlighted this, prompting the tactical adjustment. Guedes, however, failed to seize the opportunity.
Guedes Struggles to Fill the Void
Without their talismanic striker Strand Larsen, Wolves lacked a focal point in attack. The Norwegian’s ability to stretch defenses, hold up play, and capitalize on chances has been sorely missed.
Guedes found it difficult to replicate that impact. His performance reflected a player short on confidence and match sharpness, which was evident in his stats:
