Lampard: “Sunderland Made It Difficult For Us”
Speaking to The Northern Echo after the match, Lampard praised Sunderland’s defensive organization and discipline.
“Sunderland defended their box really well,” he said. “They sat deep, which was clearly part of their strategy, and they made it very difficult for us to find space or create clear chances.
“I wasn’t overly frustrated because it’s a play-off — you can’t expect teams to open up for you. We tried a few tactical changes, but they kept compact and shut down the space when we moved the ball.
“It’s always tough breaking down a low block. If the match had ended 0-0, we would’ve taken that and gone again Tuesday. But the second half changed things.”
Coventry Facing Tactical Test Ahead of Second Leg
Le Bris set Sunderland up in a 4-4-2 formation, inviting Coventry to attack while preparing to strike on the counter — a strategy that proved effective, especially with Isidor’s goal.
The approach seemed to reflect Sunderland’s respect for Coventry’s attacking threat but was clearly a calculated tactic. With a 2-1 lead in hand, it’s likely Le Bris will stick with the same game plan in the second leg.
