Sunderland and Coventry City are gearing up for the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on May 13.
Sheffield United have already taken a commanding lead toward a place at Wembley after a dominant performance against Bristol City. In contrast, the other semi-final remains finely balanced, keeping hopes alive for both sides.
Sunderland edged a 2-1 win over Coventry in the first leg, with goals from Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda proving the difference. Head coach Regis Le Bris praised the pair for their clinical finishing, noting their quality in a match where Sunderland had limited possession.
However, not all performances impressed—one Coventry player was described as “non-existent” by a Sky Sports pundit.
Supercomputer Predicts Sunderland Advantage
The return leg is scheduled for the evening of May 13 at the Stadium of Light, potentially giving Sunderland a home advantage as they aim to secure a spot in the play-off final.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, Sunderland have a 44.5% chance of winning the second leg, with Coventry given a 28.7% chance of victory. A draw, which would be enough for Sunderland to progress, is projected at 26.8%.
Frank Lampard Reflects on First Leg Performance
Despite the defeat, Coventry manager Frank Lampard remained positive about his team’s performance in the first leg, where they dominated possession for long spells.
“I’m proud of the players,” Lampard told BBC Sport. “We didn’t get the result we deserved, and I don’t think we deserved to lose. But we can’t let our heads drop—there’s still everything to play for.”
Looking ahead to the second leg, he added, “We struggled to find the breakthrough because they defended so well, but we did a lot right. Tuesday’s game could play out differently, especially in their stadium.”
