Lampard Admits Uncertainty Ahead of Coventry’s Play-Off Clash with Sunderland
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has admitted that his team is unsure what to expect from Sunderland as they prepare to visit the Stadium of Light for the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final on Tuesday night.
Sunderland head into the tie with a slender 2-1 lead, having claimed victory in the first leg at the CBS Arena.
Goals from Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda gave the Black Cats the edge, as Regis Le Bris’ side executed a disciplined game plan and capitalized on counter-attacking opportunities.
Looking ahead to the crucial second leg, Lampard acknowledged the unpredictability of Sunderland’s approach on home turf.
“We’re not exactly sure how the game will play out,” he said in a press conference. “They might not set up at home the same way they did away. It could look very different, so we have to be prepared for anything.”
Reflecting on his team’s performance and philosophy, Lampard emphasized his belief in Coventry’s style of play.
“We’ve come this far because of the way we play and the contributions from individuals within the system. Sunderland respected that in the first leg and got their result.
We just need to fine-tune a few things and remind the players to trust themselves and stick to what we do best.”
Regarding the narrow defeat last Friday, Lampard remained upbeat. “Aside from the two goals, we controlled much of the match.
We had possession, created chances, but they defended well and made life difficult.”
He added: “We need to show a bit more intent in the final third. Sometimes the margins don’t fall your way.
Sunderland came with a plan to sit deep and limit our space, which they’re fully entitled to do.
Now it’s about correcting the small mistakes, adding that extra edge in attack, and approaching the next match with confidence.”
Coventry will now aim to overturn the deficit and keep their promotion hopes alive in Tuesday’s decisive showdown.
