Sheffield United Await Either Sunderland or Coventry in Championship Play-Off Final
Sunderland will book a spot in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United if they can overcome Coventry City in the second leg of their semi-final clash on Tuesday night.
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has made it clear his team won’t be burdened by past failures in the play-offs when they step onto the pitch at Wembley.
The Blades secured their place in the final after delivering two dominant performances against Bristol City, sealing consecutive 3-0 wins in both legs of their semi-final.
Goals from Harrison Burrows, Andre Brooks, and Callum O’Hare in the first leg at Ashton Gate set the tone, and Monday’s return fixture saw further strikes from Kieffer Moore, Gustavo Hamer, and another from O’Hare to wrap up a commanding 6-0 aggregate victory.
Now, Sheffield United await the winner of the Sunderland vs Coventry tie, with the Black Cats currently holding a slight advantage thanks to a 2-1 first-leg win at the CBS Arena.
Much has been made of Sheffield United’s poor play-off history, having failed in all eight previous attempts to win promotion through the format.
Their record includes four semi-final and four final defeats, dating back to a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the 1997 Division One play-offs.
However, Wilder is determined to leave that legacy behind.
“I don’t sense any negativity around our past play-off campaigns,” he said after Monday’s win.
“There’s a fresh energy, a real belief that we can write our own history and put that past behind us. I’ve been around for much of it, but this feels different.”
He acknowledged the challenge of bouncing straight back to the Premier League: “It’s never simple. We pushed hard all season, finishing on 92 points.
For two teams to hit 100 shows just how tough the league has been. We’ve had to carry the weight of expectation and the story that we’re the nearly team.”
Reflecting on their semi-final performance, Wilder added: “We had everything to lose going into this.
The first goal was always going to be crucial. We’ve had to be sharp and execute across both legs to earn our place in the final.”
Sheffield United will now prepare for a shot at promotion, waiting to see whether Sunderland or Coventry will stand in their way.
