Dan Ballard: “A Dream Come True” as Sunderland Seal Wembley Spot
Sunderland’s Dan Ballard described his dramatic extra-time winner against Coventry City as “what dreams are made of” after sending the Black Cats to the Championship play-off final.
Ballard, who delivered standout performances across both legs, scored a 122nd-minute header to secure Sunderland’s place at Wembley. Their first-leg lead had been erased when Ephron Mason-Clark scored for Coventry late in the second leg, leveling the aggregate score.
Frank Lampard’s side had been the better team for most of the 90 minutes, but Sunderland responded strongly in extra time, sparked by the introduction of Romaine Mundle.
Ballard’s decisive goal came from Enzo Le Fee’s corner, setting up a final clash against Sheffield United with a Premier League spot on the line.
Reflecting on the moment, Ballard said: “It’s what dreams are made of. The fans were unbelievable today.
“It started to feel like it just wasn’t going to happen for us. All the boys were desperate to give something back to the supporters. What a finish—pure drama.”
On the goal itself, he added: “Romaine kind of got in the way and I jumped too early—I can’t even really remember what happened next. It’s just an unbelievable feeling.”
