Chris Wilder Reacts as Sheffield United Cruise into Play-Off Final with Record-Breaking Win
Sheffield United remain firmly on track to join Leeds United and Burnley in the Premier League next season after dismantling Bristol City with a record-breaking aggregate victory in the Championship play-off semi-finals.
Chris Wilder’s side secured a dominant 3-0 win at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night, adding to their identical first-leg triumph at Ashton Gate to complete a stunning 6-0 aggregate success—the largest margin ever recorded in play-off history.
Goals from Kieffer Moore, Gus Hamer, and Callum O’Hare sealed the second-leg result, booking the Blades a place at Wembley, where they’ll face either Coventry City or Sunderland on May 24 for the final promotion spot.
Although United’s push for automatic promotion ended over Easter—following a 2-1 defeat at Burnley just hours after Leeds thrashed Stoke 6-0—the Blades finished the season strongly, earning 92 points.
However, that tally still left them 10 points behind both Leeds and Burnley, who each reached 100 points, with Leeds claiming the title in dramatic fashion on the final day at Plymouth.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the win, Wilder reflected on the campaign and what lies ahead:
“Would I have liked the automatic race to go to the last game? Absolutely.
Are we jealous of Leeds and Burnley? Of course. But we regrouped, sent out the right messages, and looked forward to what’s next. We didn’t take a step back in either leg, and I’m delighted.”
Wilder is now chasing a third promotion as Sheffield United manager.
However, the club’s history in the play-offs hasn’t been kind—no team has suffered more heartbreak, with nine failed attempts and three losses in Championship finals.
Still, Wilder insists that past setbacks aren’t weighing on this squad:
“I don’t feel a negativity from our play-off history. There’s a freshness to this group, a belief that we can make our own history and leave that behind.
“I’ve been around for most of those disappointments. Coming straight back up isn’t easy—we pushed all season long. To get 92 points in a year where two teams hit 100 is incredible.
“We’ve also had to battle the narrative of being the nearly team, as well as our poor play-off track record. So, we knew we had to be at our best. The first goal was crucial, and over both games, we got it right.”
Now, one final hurdle stands between Wilder’s side and a return to the Premier League.
With confidence high and momentum on their side, Sheffield United will be hoping to end their play-off curse once and for all at Wembley.
