After a difficult match where Sunderland struggled to assert themselves during regular time, Ephron Mason-Clark’s second-half goal brought Coventry level on aggregate, a fair reflection of their strong display.
Momentum shifted in extra time following the impactful introductions of Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle.
The duo energized Sunderland’s performance, leading to a decisive moment when Ballard rose highest to meet Enzo Le Fée’s corner, sending the Stadium of Light into wild celebrations.
Head coach Régis Le Bris reflected on the emotional scenes:
“It was absolutely fantastic. To score so late and earn the chance to play at Wembley – that’s what football is about.
Coventry played really well; they controlled large parts of the game. We were caught between protecting our first-leg lead and trying to play our usual game. With such a young squad, it’s not easy in these pressure moments.”
“But the team stayed united. We defended with energy and knew our substitutions could shift the momentum.
That’s exactly what happened in extra time. Rigg, Romaine, and Enzo changed the game. We showed a different side of Sunderland in the closing stages. The finishers did a great job.”
