Amad Returns to Sunderland to Support Former Club in Dramatic Play-Off Victory
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo was back at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night to cheer on his former loan club Sunderland as they battled Coventry City in a dramatic Championship play-off semi-final second leg.
Amad, who starred for the Black Cats during the 2022/23 season, watched from the stands as Sunderland clung to a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg.
That advantage slipped away when Ephron Mason-Clark scored for Coventry late in the second half, forcing the match into extra time.
Despite relentless pressure from Frank Lampard’s side, Sunderland held firm.
Manager Régis Le Bris made impactful substitutions late on, which ultimately paid off in the final minute of extra time when Dan Ballard headed home from an Enzo Le Fée corner to seal a 3-2 aggregate win and send Sunderland to Wembley.
Before kick-off, Amad posted an Instagram story showing his view from behind the dugouts.
After the final whistle, he shared his joy with emojis celebrating the Black Cats’ win, as they now prepare to face Sheffield United in the final on May 24, with Premier League promotion on the line.
Amad made a lasting impression during his loan spell at Sunderland, scoring 14 goals and assisting four more as the team’s top scorer last season.
However, his efforts fell short of promotion glory as the side were knocked out by Luton Town in the 2023 semi-finals.
Reflecting on his time at the club in an interview last year, Amad shared heartfelt praise:
“Sunderland was my second loan, and I have so many beautiful memories.
The club, the fans—they supported me and were amazing to my family and me, both on and off the pitch. I truly enjoyed every moment there.”
He added, “I wish everyone at Sunderland the best, now and in the future—they’re a fantastic club.”
