Everton Secure Win Over Fulham but Questions Remain Over Several Players
Everton’s victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage this past weekend helped solidify their mid-table status.
When David Moyes took over from Sean Dyche in January, relegation fears loomed large—but those concerns are now easing.
The Toffees were trailing 1-0 when Vitalii Mykolenko’s deflected strike in first-half stoppage time pulled them level.
In the second half, goals from Michael Keane and Beto sealed an impressive away win.
Keane and Abdoulaye Doucoure, who provided the assist for Mykolenko’s goal, are both out of contract next month.
Yet, their strong performances may have strengthened their case for being retained when the club moves to Bramley-Moore Dock.
Not All Contracts Will Be Renewed
While some players may have made a compelling argument to stay, others failed to impress.
Moyes inherited a long list of contractual dilemmas upon arriving at Goodison Park.
Though the arrival of Angus Kinnear—who replaces Kevin Thelwell—should help ease the burden, difficult decisions lie ahead.
Keane and Doucoure may be aging and costly, but they still offer valuable depth and experience. Ashley Young, however, seems to be nearing the end of the road.
At 39, he struggled significantly against Fulham’s pacey attackers Alex Iwobi and Ryan Sessegnon. The Liverpool ECHO rated his display just 5/10, noting his lack of defensive sharpness.
Loanee Jack Harrison, 28, also received a 5/10 rating. Despite being younger, he hasn’t offered much more.
With only one goal and one assist in 36 appearances this season, his performance against Fulham was once again underwhelming.
Subbed off after just an hour, he struggled to make an impact.
Broja’s Time at Everton Nearing an End
While Harrison and Young started the match, another underperformer spent the afternoon on the bench.
Armando Broja, plagued by injuries, has failed to make any meaningful contribution this season and has been an unused substitute for the past two matches, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin now fit.
Everton should think twice before turning Broja’s loan move into a permanent transfer.
The Albanian striker joined from Chelsea last summer on a one-year deal, with an option to buy for £30 million.
However, he’s failed to score in any competition this season and hasn’t even registered a shot on target in his 13 appearances, according to Sofascore.
Broja, once described as an “animal” during his Southampton stint by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, has been a shadow of that player.
With just two Premier League goals over the last three seasons, investing £30 million would be a costly gamble—one that Chelsea would be happy to cash in on.
While Broja still possesses potential, Everton would be wiser to look elsewhere this summer.
