Dan Neil Reflects on Dramatic Play-Off Triumph and Praises Sunderland Fans
Sunderland captain Dan Neil gave an emotional and in-depth interview following the Black Cats’ dramatic play-off semi-final win over Coventry City on Tuesday night, singling out the incredible support from fans as a key factor in their success.
Speaking after the 3-2 aggregate victory at the Stadium of Light, sealed by Dan Ballard’s dramatic last-minute goal, Neil compared the electric pre-match scenes to those typically seen at top Premier League clubs like Liverpool.
“It Was Unbelievable” – Neil on the Atmosphere
“I knew the atmosphere in the stadium would be manic and that it’d be a sell-out – that didn’t surprise me,” Neil said. “But the scenes outside the ground on the way in… I’ve never experienced anything like that.
I’ve only seen things like that on TV from clubs like Liverpool. To actually be part of it was one of the best moments of my life.”
On Ballard’s Late Winner
When asked if the winning goal was the best moment of his career, Neil didn’t hesitate:
“Absolutely. I had no idea where to run after we scored. I leapt over the boards and started cramping up in the crowd.
These are the moments you dream about as a kid. To know how much it meant to the fans, the staff, and everyone involved with the club – it was just unreal.”
Sunderland’s Grit and Spirit on Full Display
With over 46,000 fans creating a cauldron of noise at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland showed their resilience and composure under pressure.
Neil, a lifelong supporter of the club, praised the determination of his teammates.
“It speaks volumes about the character of this squad,” he said. “Our motto is ‘Til The End’ and we absolutely lived up to that.
We were exhausted mentally and physically, but we found another gear in the final minutes of extra time. Ballard delivered a moment of magic.”
Neil admitted the team’s confidence on the ball had wavered in recent matches but said the side found a spark late in the game.
“We knew Coventry press really well and didn’t want to give anything silly away.
But in the last 15 minutes, we just went for it—took control, made things happen, and fed off the crowd. That belief pushed us through.”
On Coventry, Critics, and a Message to Ben Wilson
Neil also addressed the critics who doubted Sunderland heading into the semi-finals.
“It felt like we were written off before a ball was even kicked, especially given our record against Coventry.
That gave us fire. We stuck together, stayed disciplined, and delivered when it mattered most. This win means everything.”
After the match, Neil shared a moment with former Sunderland keeper Ben Wilson, now with Coventry.
“Ben’s a great guy. I wished him the best for next season. Coventry were tough opponents and really pushed us over both legs. I’ve got nothing but respect for them.”
Now, Sunderland look ahead to the final against Sheffield United at Wembley, with Premier League promotion just one match away.
