Lucas Paqueta given ‘impossible’ verdict as reports of £25m West Ham exit clarified

Lucas Paqueta’s Future in Doubt as Potential Lifetime Ban Looms

Uncertainty surrounds the future of West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta, one of the Premier League’s most naturally talented players, as he faces the possibility of a lifetime ban from football.

The Football Association may impose a permanent ban on Paqueta if he’s found guilty of spot-fixing, with the verdict of a long-running investigation expected in the first half of June.

The emotional strain is clearly taking its toll on the Brazilian international, who broke down in tears after receiving a yellow card during West Ham’s recent 1-1 draw with Tottenham. Given the circumstances, it’s possible that the £38 million signing from Lyon has already played his final game for the Hammers.

Despite mounting speculation about a potential return to Brazil with Flamengo, journalist Jorge Nicola believes clubs are unlikely to move for Paqueta until the outcome of the case is clear.

“Which club would be willing to negotiate for Paqueta right now,” Nicola asks, “knowing that a verdict could end his career at any moment?”

No Deal Until Verdict Reached

Reports suggest there is little chance of a short-term suspension—Paqueta will either be cleared or face a permanent ban. In light of this, West Ham may seek to offload him in the summer and are reportedly willing to accept around £25 million—far less than the £80 million Manchester City were prepared to pay in 2023.

However, Nicola insists Flamengo won’t make any move until the legal situation is resolved. “Flamengo are closely monitoring the situation because they know he could be a valuable asset,” Nicola explains. “But making an offer before the verdict is announced is out of the question.”

Recent Performances and Team News

Paqueta has shown strong form recently, particularly in the draw against Spurs where he excelled in a deeper midfield role under Graham Potter. He was, however, left out of the starting lineup in West Ham’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Potter attributed the decision to a minor illness and the off-field distractions Paqueta is currently facing. “Lucas had a tough week off the pitch and wasn’t feeling well with a cold,” Potter said. Despite not starting, Paqueta and Niclas Fullkrug were praised as quality options from the bench.

With West Ham climbing above both Manchester United and Tottenham into 15th place, the club’s focus remains on football—but Paqueta’s fate hangs heavily in the balance.
