Leeds United Linked with Potential Kalvin Phillips Reunion Amid Injury Concerns
Leeds United are once again being linked with a potential move to bring back Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan at relegated Ipswich Town under manager Kieran McKenna.
While Leeds have plenty of options in the transfer market, focusing too heavily on sentiment or past connections could be shortsighted.
Still, rumors persist about the club targeting former players or those familiar with head coach Daniel Farke.
Phillips’ return to the Premier League spotlight has sparked speculation, with many fans hopeful of a reunion.
However, the 29-year-old has faced a challenging spell since his £45 million move to Manchester City in 2022, and his career hasn’t regained the momentum it once had.
His time at Ipswich has done little to change that narrative.
Speaking to East Anglian Daily Times, McKenna praised Phillips’ professionalism but acknowledged his struggles this season.
“He’s been a positive influence in the group,” McKenna said. “He had a decent run of games early in the season while still working back to top form.
Around Christmas, he hit a good spell—especially in the first 60 minutes against Tottenham, where he was excellent.”
Unfortunately, injuries once again disrupted Phillips’ momentum. A deep foot gash required stitches and sidelined him, followed by a lingering Achilles issue.
McKenna confirmed Phillips will miss the upcoming fixtures and likely won’t feature again this season.
“It’s been frustrating for both him and us. A fully fit Kalvin would’ve made a big impact. But despite the setbacks, he’s remained a positive presence,” McKenna added.
Looking ahead, Leeds fans are left wondering if a return for Phillips is a risk worth taking.
While a fit and firing Phillips could be a major asset—especially given his history under Marcelo Bielsa—his recent fitness issues raise serious doubts.
As McKenna pointed out, if Phillips were at his peak, he wouldn’t be playing for a team that’s struggled so significantly this season.
Bringing him back would carry risk, particularly for a club aiming to stay in the Premier League.
