Sunderland have booked their spot in the Championship play-off final after a dramatic extra-time victory over Coventry City, and midfielder Dan Neil says the focus is now fully on completing the job at Wembley.
The semi-final seemed destined for penalties until Dan Ballard powered home a 122nd-minute header, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win and sending the Stadium of Light into raptures.
The dramatic finish quickly went viral, but Neil insists the team isn’t getting carried away.
Reflecting on the moment, Neil said:
“I told my dad afterward—it’s surreal to be part of one of those moments you usually just see on TV. Whether it’s Defoe against Newcastle or dramatic goals from around the world, this was one of those. But we don’t want that to be the end of the story. We want to go all the way and be remembered for winning promotion, not just for Dan’s header.”
Neil added that after enjoying the high of the win, the team has refocused and is now fully locked in on their final showdown with Sheffield United.
“We had a day off after the game, and of course the atmosphere was amazing,” he said. “But once we got back to training, everyone switched on again. The goal now is Wembley—and winning.”
Patterson’s Solo Celebration: “I Was All Over the Place”
Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson shared his own unique take on the wild ending, revealing it took him a moment to realise the ball had gone in after ricocheting off the crossbar.
“It took me a second to figure out it had crossed the line,” Patterson said. “After that, I was just running around like a headless chicken! I thought about sprinting up the pitch to celebrate, but it was a bit too far. I ended up just doing some fist pumps near the staff.”
He added, “I’ve probably watched it a hundred times now—it keeps showing up on my phone, and you just can’t skip it!”
With the play-off final looming, Sunderland’s sights are now firmly set on returning to the Premier League—and finishing what they started.
